Is writer's block real when writing a business book?
Stuart Bell
From A Brutally Honest Guide™ to Using a Book to Build Your Business
Writer's block is real for artists, but you're not creating art. You're building a business tool. When you treat your book like any other business process with frameworks and systems, writer's block simply doesn't have a chance.
You're not a novelist. You're a business owner who needs a book that works. The sooner you understand this difference, the faster you'll get your book done and start generating leads.
The longer you fall back on artistic constraints, the longer you're not having conversations with people who would happily pay you to solve their problems. Every day you spend waiting for the perfect words is another day your competitors are connecting with your ideal clients.
Stop thinking like an artist
Writers and artistic types have a visceral connection to writer's block. They believe it's a legitimate challenge that only the elite few overcome. They wait for inspiration. They sit in front of blank screens at 4 AM hoping lightning strikes.
But this mindset is killing your project.
Think about this like any system in your business. If you ran a bakery and only employed artist bakers who came in each morning to rub their chins and wonder what they felt inspired to bake that day, you'd go out of business fast. Your customers would walk next door to the bakery that reliably produces fresh bread every morning.
Instead, you'd hire skilled people who could follow standard operating procedures designed to get tasty bread out the door to customers when they want it. That's a production exercise, not an artistic one.
Your book is a production exercise too, and you need a formula that works.
Follow the recipe
When you're writing a business building book, you need frameworks and recipes that work. You don't need to sit and cogitate waiting for inspiration to strike so you can verbalize your expertise in some unique way.
Here's what you actually need:
- Your knowledge and expertise about your customer's problems
- A title that resonates with your audience and makes them raise their hands
- A proven framework for getting those words onto the page
The framework moves readers toward your call to action or shortcuts them straight there because now you know who they are. You can start real conversations outside the pages of your book. This means more qualified leads walking through your door, ready to work with you.
Treat writing like any business process
When you treat your book like a business process instead of an artistic endeavor, everything changes.
Use proven frameworks: picking a narrow audience, understanding their pain and questions, providing value in answers they need where they are today. When you do that, writer's block simply doesn't have a chance.
Focus on getting your expertise onto the page in a way that helps your ideal clients identify themselves and take action. Schedule writing time like client meetings. Non-negotiable and productive.
What to do now
Writer's block disappears when you show up with a process. Pick one question your clients ask you every week. Set a timer for 20 minutes. Write the answer like you're explaining it to a real person sitting across from you. That's one chapter done. Repeat tomorrow.
